Dance Church has no rules per se. It is a dance jam in the vein of Friday night events with an emphasis on uplifting music. Dancers are improving (long "o") on their own and in interaction with other dancers. There are several contact improv types who work in pairs or sometimes larger groups. The DJs set the mood.

A little history about Dance Church--they've had Friday night dance jams at the 418 Project for years. About two years ago Kerry, a dance student from UC Santa Cruz, did a community project that involved the realization of the idea of a Dance Church. She and her friend Michelle were inspired by their friend Jim to create and publicize Dance Church. It definitely has a more spiritual feel than the usual jam scene. It meets every Sunday from 9:00 to 11:30 AM at 418 Front Street in Santa Cruz.

I got involved after returning from my first Burning Man in 2002 and feeling the need to find a similar community at home. I went to the 418 about a year and a half ago to get updated on the Friday jam and found Dance Church. I've been attending ever since. I was one of the instigators for the creation of a Dance Church camp at Burning Man '03. I also created a Yahoo! Group at groups.yahoo.com/group/DanceChurch/ .

My goal is to bring community dance and movement into my life every day. This last year during Burning Man I was able to do that, and the 418 Project and Dance Church help me work towards that ideal the rest of the year. Burning Man and Dance Church are my twin passions right now.

That's very cool! Thanks for elaborating for me. Sunday is not the best day for me schedule wise, but I will definitely make a point to make it to a Dance Church sooner rather than later. Thanks again for your post!

        Hello,

By way of introduction, I'm Bret, Santa Cruz local freak who loves to dance and play music. Hi!

I have long been interested in checking out the Dance Church, but I'm such a night owl, I am never up at that time, much less awake and feeling like dancing.

Does it ever happen later? Or at any other times?

        Have a wonderful day folks!

          My feelings exactly, Bret.

I'm a night owl and just would lose to much sleep to go to Dance Church...........sure sounds fun though.

Interestingly enough, I find some of the most creative dancers on Monday nights at the BOX (at the Blue Lagoon) which is the goth/industrial weekly club.

To my surprise and delight, I discovered an atmosphere that was
not at all dark in vibe (despite mostly black clothing) but one that was incredibly friendly..........full of exceedingly creative people (almost everyone is a dancer, musician, theater tech, poet, photographer, DJ, etc.) who seem to be pretty singularly
          non-sexist, non-aegist (how refreshing), non-homophobic.

Though there is an unofficial dress code there, there is a tremendous variety in what people wear within that 'code' and
really odd dancing is completely accepted........I should know, I'm a pretty odd dancer..............lol.

Come check it out if you dare.

          yours,

            Hey Rick,

No kidding?? Hmmm. Well I am open to the possibilities!

I think I used to be on your email list. Didn't you send out loopool announcements or something?

Well anyway, thanks for the info. I'll hope to check that out.

Some friends in the Happy Brigade and I are talking about throwing free dance parties regularly somewhere, like a private home with enough room, or possibly sponsoring them at 418, since it's only $150. Get a group to split the expense and make it free for everyone else. Still have yet to manifest it though.

            Maybe soon....

            Have a good one,

            -BB
